Basic Insurance Types

Insurance in New Zealand can be hard to understand.

Here are the main types in New Zealand when it comes to looking after yourself and your family.

Life insurance cover.

WHY?

This is because you love someone else and want to make sure they have no financial debt when you are not here anymore.

It pays you upon Death and Terminal Illness (12 months or less to live).

It is TAX FREE and pays in lump sum.

Critical condition cover (or Trauma cover).

WHY?

This pays you if you have a major illness or accident, (Cancer, Stroke, Heart Attack, Loss or Limbs, Severe Burns, plus about 50 more things).  It’ll mean that you aren’t working anymore and maybe your partner has to stop work to look after you.

It is also TAX FREE and pays you in lump sum.

Health Cover (there are few different types).

WHY?

Medical: This pays for medical expenses for surgery and hospital charges.

Specialist and Tests: This pays the speciast fees and test that you may need (MRI, CT Scan, colonoscopy plus any others).

Doctors and Prescriptions: This pays for a portion of your Doctors Bills and Prescriptions that you get.

Dental and Optical:  This pays for a portion of your dental bills and optician costs.

ACC or the Accident Compensation Corporation.

ACC: If you are self employed you pay ACC levies each year and this covers you for 80% of your income if you have an accident (at work or home, or anywhere in NZ). You can change how this works for you to save money and I can help. It’s called ACC Cover Plus Extra. And you can fix the amount that you want to be covered for. This becomes an agreed amount and pays out after 7 days with no need to prove finances.

If you are employed your employer pays the ACC levies.

Income and Mortgage protection.

WHY?

Income and Mortgage protection pays you while you are not working. If you are getting ACC then sometimes you cant get both, (I can help). If the Doctor says you cant work then you get paid every month till you are better.  This cover can be taxed or not it depends which cover you get. (I can help).

Cover for Children

Children can get Free Cover if you take out Critical Condition (Trauma) Cover

You CANNOT get Life cover on Children under the age of 16

Health Cover you can get for your children at ANY time, they are usually about $25 per month.

In New Zealand, the public health system covers you in emergencies and is FREE of charge. However if its more serious (Cancer), it is very slow and many people don’t get the medication or surgery they need, fast enough. This is why Private Insurance  is so important. It means you have the finances to keep you family protected and can get better faster.
